New Year Trip to Yellowstone National Park

Happy New Year to everyone!

I took a break from blogging over the holidays so we had time to visit Yellowstone Park over the New Year and thought I would share a few photos my husband Bill and I took.  The weather was fairly mild for this time of year as the highs were in the 20's or warmer. In years past, the temperatures were in the negative numbers, so we felt fortunate to have the mild weather. It snowed off and on, but the park service plows the roads continuously so it doesn't accumulate on the roads very much. Still, there were several people that went off the road and had to be towed back on the road.

Bill shot this photo from Hellroaring overlook in the NE part of the park just as the sun was disappearing over the horizon.

I shot this photo of a young male Bighorn Sheep as it was grazing next to the road.

A few bull moose were wintering near Pebble Creek Campground. On Sunday, I'll post a video that Bill took of four bull moose. It's  exciting, because three of them take turns chasing each other.

I shot this picture of a 7x7 bull Elk on the Blacktail Plateau. There are not very many elk with 7 points on each side.  The points indicate how old they are, so this one is a fully mature bull elk.

I took this picture along the road to Cooke City, Montana. The mound of snow in the bottom right of the picture is a a picnic table.

This picture was taken by Bill near the Soda Butte. The mountain on the right is the Thunderer, the middle peaks are Amphitheater Peak and Abiathar Peak.

One of the highlights of our trip was we were lucky enough to see wolves on a kill site. Bill took this picture of a female wolf scaring the ravens off the kill. The elk was actually killed by another pack the night before and this wolf and her mate were taking advantage of it. Notice that she has a satellite collar on her neck so the Park Service can track her and her mate.

Thanks for taking the time to look at our photos

Happy New Year! The pictures are stunning but I'm sure being there and experiencing the beauty cannot be seen in pictures. I hope to visit that area of the US someday.
