Trip to Yellowstone

Hi, this is Bill, Linda's DH. Linda was nice enough to let me go on a three day dawn to dusk photo trip to Yellowstone Park and she asked me to share some of my photos.

The view north from Blacktail Plateau towards Electric Peak.

I have always hoped to find otters, but have not had much luck recently. This time, however, I hiked off the road towards the Lamar River and was lucky enough to be in the right place. The otters had traveled under the ice to this small patch of open water and were quite willing to let me watch their antics.

Wherever otters, go, there is always a slip-n-slide.

This bull elk #10. He is taking a rest after the rut in the Mammoth area of Yellowstone National Park.

I stopped to watch some bison and while I was shooting pictures, the park rangers darted one to get scientific data. They were stampeding up the hill when I took this shot.

I hope you enjoyed these photos. Linda will be back Wednesday with a brand new post so see you then!

Bill

Such amazing pics! I lived in Great Falls as a grade school child...we took many trips to Yellowstone and Glacier, as I have now with my husband and children. I miss the "Big Sky" country that you are lucky enough to live in. So beautiful up there!

Love your pics, you are blessed to be able to see all this lovely nature. Living in central NJ all I seem to see anymore is the nature of people. Thanks for sharing all the pics. I just love the playful otters.

Wow! Love the pictures,we were there this past summer it was beautiful. I think it is so cool how the animals are just sitting on the side of the road and they are not bothered by cars passing. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks everyone for your nice comments!

Debby here is your answer from Bill:

Thanks everyone for the great comments. I used a variety of settings for the pictures, but here are the basics.

Camera- Canon 7D
Lens- Canon 100-400L IS
Aperture- f14
Shutter speed 1/800
ISO 640

I shoot most of them in aperture priority (Av) setting on the dial. I then set my aperture to f8 or higher. The higher numbers make the picture sharper, but also make the shutter speed slower. If the shutter speed gets slower, the photo gets blurry unless I use a tripod.

I used a tripod for most photos, except the mountain photo, where I sat inside my pickup because the wind was blowing 30 mph.

Thanks for looking at my photos and remember, when in doubt, keep shooting. (especially when there is good light!) :)

Stunningly beautiful photos! You get the Gold Star Husband Award for (1)being aware of your wife's blog and how to get to it, (2)knowing how to post, and (3)actually posting your photos!

I might have to send you my husband's phone number so you clue him in!

Thank you for sharing your amazing shots with us!
