I keep a template on my gypsy that is the size of several standard cards I make, as well as 8.5x11 paper (since that is what I scrapbook) so that I can easily see how what I am cutting out will fit on the page or project that I am working on. Thanks for a chance to win!

My favorite tip that I picked up recently was to use my bone folder to firmly secure my paper to the cricut mat. I haven't ripped a piece of paper since!!

Thanks for the chance to win. My favorite tip for the cricut is to make sure you are using a mat with enough stickiness. I can't tell you how many cuts I have ruined because my paper didn't stick tightly to the mat.

If I don't feel my paper is sticking well enough to the mat and I don't have the time or things on hand to recondition the mat, I take small bits of masking tape or painters tape and tape them in strategic places on the edges of the paper to make sure the paper stays on the mat. (The same tape pieces can be used several times.) Since I've started doing that, I haven't had a single piece of paper move on the mat. Thanks so much for the chance to win.

My latest Cricut tip is use of Layerz paper by Megan Elizabeth. The multi-colored 4" squares on each 12x12 sheet makes layering easier and fun to do. Thanks for cartridge offer.

My cricut tip is to use a lint roller on your mat once it starts to not be as sticky anymore. This removes any bits and pieces left behind and helps prolong the life of the mat. Thank you for the chance to win!!

Gina said...

My tip would be to rotate my mat every time I make a cut. Especially if I am using my Cricut all day or making a lot of cuts! This prevents only one area getting worn out faster! Thanks for the chance to win!

tndj said...

when my cricut mat has lost its stickiness - I use spray adhesive to extend it a little longer. Once the mat has done it's job and ready to throw away. I use it to hold my projects in place while I paint, emboss or stamp. works good.

Elaine Laws said...

When I buy a new mat, I take a Sharpie and write my name on the cover before I take it off. That way, I know which side is the top when I go to replace it.

I do love the "hide contour" feature you just reminded us of. Another great tip was just posted at http://www.obsessedwithscrapbooking.com/about using RGB colors in the Cricut Craft room to see how things will look! So delighted to especially have the Stampin' Up! RGB codes that are linked in this post (11/29/11)!

I don't know about anyone else, but I seem to cut the wrong size that I need quite often and then my cardstock I wanted to use is all used up, SOOOO my favorite tip would be to use plain copy paper or notebook paper and cut your shape first on it if you are not sure of the size it will cut out at. This helps so much with saving your cardstock. Thanks for the chance to win. :D

I like to use a stamp roller when I put my paper on the mat it seems to seal it to the mat and helps it stick.I am a new subcriber and love all your hints and cards and all the other stuff you make.

Lisa said...

I use my old unsticky mats to hold those little pieces that keep flying around the table when I am trying to pick them up or put glue on them. I put them on the mat, put glue on them, then pick them up with the cricut reverse tweezers. No more chasing those little eyes and noses around the table.

Momof4inArlington said...

I apologize for repeating a tip, but I also save various standard card-sized bases as templates on my Gypsy. It really does take the guesswork out of sizing your cuts every time you start a new project. I also put a small dot of repositionable adhesive on the tip of an opened paperclip to pick up/place small cuts. Thank you for the opportunity to win!

When I use my stamps I like to use Huggies baby wipes to clean my stamps. And if u are having a hard time learning how to use your cricut or gypsy check out aboves rubies.com Megan has GREAT videos.

My favorite tip is to find that Cricut cartridge that you haven't used in forever and limit yourself to just that cartridge for a few projects. This helps me remember just why I had to have it. All of the cartridges have great images on them, I just get in a rut using the same cartridges over and over.

missstamper said...

My favorite tip is to have a settings guide taped to the inside of the lid to my Expression. It has really helped me to remember what setting to use for each type of paper.

When my mat isn't sticky, I clean it well and when it is dry, I use basting spray.I give it a light coat and let it dry before I use it. The basting spray don't seem to be as yucky as adhesive spray.

After my mat has lost it's stickiness I wash it with soap and water then I use my wide two way glue pen and go over the whole thing to re-sticky it. I leave it alone overnight and then I can reuse my mat over and over again. I've only used three mats in three years this way.

Your videos rock. They are so easy to follow and help in learning the new products. I am so watching yours for the new craft room. Hopefully you will do some on the new mini cricut and using the gypsy with it. All your tips are good. How about a place where one could print out all the tips? Maybe by product? with the connecting site to see a video?

My favorite tip is the one I learned today in the Cricut Craft Room. It was how to color your images while in the craft room so that you know what it will look like when you cut it out and where to put what color papers. It was very helpful.

Anonymous said...

When I have a cricut cut with a lot of pieces/layers, I first do the design on plain paper with one of the cricut pens. It is easier to figure out where everything goes using this as a pattern. I then save the "drawing" in a small photo album for future use.

I usually cut out my design on a piece of scrap paper before using the paper I really want to use. That way, if the size is wrong you can correct it first. Thanks!

LOVE all the tips..thanks! I take my cartridge booklets and label all the pages with the corresponding key by labeling rows (down) A, B C D and then number the keys within the row across..so that when you've selected a particular image, you'll see it's B8 on the keyboard quickly.

Linda, great tips so far! Also this was a great video - your snowman was beyond words. I think my favorite tip and after I got this I started liking my Cricut a whole lot better was to load my mat with all the colors of paper I would be using and then move my blade around on the mat and cut out as I go. This works if you are only making one or two images, you are tight on time and you need to get your card/project together.

My favorite tip is when I put paper on the mat I rub the paper on with my hands and it stays on very well. When I put the paper down on the mat I rotate the sides. I really would like a chance to win this.

Cynthia Baldwin said...

My favorite tip is about how to extend the life of a mat: Use a big zig glue pen (the kind that when the glue is wet, the adhesive is permanent, and when it's dry, the adhesive is repositionable) - run it in crosshatches across the whole mat and make sure the glue is completely dry. You'll have a mat that isn't too sticky, but sticky enough to keep the paper on your mat again. :)

With my Imagine cartridges, I created a template using my Gypsy that allows me to make a sample of each patterned paper and swatches of the color palettes. It is sized so that it can all be printed onto a letter-sized piece of cardstock, which I put into a binder. I love having the handy reference and the actual colors to refer to. Thanks, Linda!

My favorite Cricut tip is that I keep one mat for heavier paper so it sticks better and another more used mat for thinner paper.

When making a card and experimenting with cuts, I always try to use up all the extra pieces and make two or three cards at the same time. I put them in a box organized by occasion and have extras for last minute birthdays or other occasions. Opening that box is like opening a surprise package when I haven't needed it for a while. Some cards I like some I don't when I revisit them.

My favorite tip is to keep files for all of the extra paper you end up with when you cut with your Cricut. I keep these in file boxes, and always go through the scraps before I use up another full piece of cardstock. Definitely saves paper!

And to adhere the smaller pieces/letters/etc. I use a ZIG glue pen! Makes things soooo much easier!

Thanks for the chance to win. I love your site. My favorite tip is for when using Gypsy or Cricut Craftroom. If you want to create a photo mat or mat for your cards unlink the height and width. None of the cartridges have a 4x6 rectangle or something proportionate. This allows you to make your mat whatever size you want and changing the width wont alter the height. For a long time I never knew they could be unlinked :)

Thanks Linda, I love all the great videos you create! My tip would be to do a bunch of test cuts when you get a new cartridge. It is important to try to do it within 3 months of purchasing in case it is a"bad" cartridge. Reading the messageboards help to keep track of which carts are known to have issues. I blogged my method of quick test-cutting and everyone is welcome to look if they like. Also, don't throw out those test cuts, save them up in a pile & give them away to a school or seniors Centre to use in their projects.

Love all the tips! I use quite a few of them already. One I recently learned: while making party items for my granddaughter's birthday, I used a 12x24 mat and used large, cheap poster board for signs, banners, confetti, cupcake toppers, etc. These were items that I knew I would not save to reuse. At 2 to 3 pieces of poster board for $1, it allowed me (who has a paper fetish!!!) to save all my great scrapbook papers for cards, invitations, etc. I just took one of my 12x24 mats and labeled it poster board. That's all I use it for now! Thanks for the opportunity and sharing such GREAT ideas!

I cut two of every cricut shape that I make. One for the project I need it for, and the other is put in to a shoebox for later. It doesn't seem like it takes any longer to make two than one as you already have the paper out.

I used to have a problem not knowing which way the image would cut. I ruined several photos thinking the frame was cutting one way and then it would cut the opposite way. If you aim the left hand side of the booklet towards the Cricut, that is the way the image will cut. After realizing this, I've saved a lot of pictures. Thanks for the chance to win.

Wow! Great tips! I use a lot of them already but found some new ones. My favorite tip is to use a foam mat under your paper when stamping. Experiment with the stamp after inking on scratch paper to know how much pressure to put on the stamp pad when stamping. Merry Christmas to all!

KardsbyKadie said...

I think my favorite Cricut tip is remember that your cut image is going to cut on your mat in the same direction that it is sampled in your users manual. This visual helps me remember how my paper needs to be loaded onto my mat if I'm using several different colors of cardstock on my mat (all in different locations on my mat). I position my cardstock on my mat in the same direction that it's oriented in my users manual and then I know I will have my cardstock positioned on my mat in the right direction to cut out my image. Sounds fairly simple but can't tell you how many times I've layed my paper in the wrong direction on my mat and had to re-cut my image (Moving my paper in the other direction).
Many THANKS to all the wonderful comments left so far-GREAT TIPS FREINDS!

Thank you for another opportunity to win a terrific prize! I am still a novice with my cricut but found this to be helpful to me. Rather than wasting my good paper/cardstock and not knowing how the image will print or what size (so confusing to me still), I cut on an inexpensive white cardstock, then mark the size and cartridge used on the back of the image. I put that into a binder for future reference.

What a delight to watch your video and go through all the wonderful tips left above! I'd love to know more about conditioning mats prior to use. That's new to me.

As for my tip, when I make shape cards, I always cut an extra shadow for the front. That way, once my card base is folded, I can add the extra layer on top and the shape is complete (without a portion lost due to the welding/folding that occurs).

You look very fresh and healthy in the video - and I hope you'll return that way quickly!

My favorite tip that has made my cricut life so much better is to use the deep cut blade in your regular housing to get better cuts. I can do the smallest most intricate cuts with no tearing now. I always make a few extra cuts when making something I know I'll use again. Then when I want to make something I pull out my extras, put them together and make a craft item. This works well especially when I'm crafting when everyone else is sleeping in on the weekends and I can't cut with my Cricut.

I'm new to cricut and scrapping. My tip is to take your time and think your way through what you're going to cut ( size, setting & etc) before you push the cut button. This has helped me not make to many mistakes. I keep any miscut pieces for use maybe later. I also have a hard 12' x 12' 4" high hard plastic container I keep all my scraps.

I hate how sticky a new mat is, so I take a clean sock and rub/stamp the mat with it to take the super stick away.
